Today, I had the grace of attending for the grand celebration of the Feast of St. Nicolas de Tolentino, the beloved patron of Surigao City. The day was filled with color, devotion, and deep expressions of faith as the people gathered to honor the saint known for his humility, compassion, and intercession for the souls in purgatory.
The highlight of the celebration was the Solemn Eucharistic Celebration, presided by the Most Rev. Nolly C. Buco, DD, Bishop of Catarman, together with the Most Rev. Antonieto Cabajog, DD, Bishop of Surigao. Their presence brought a strong sense of communion and joy to the faithful, reminding us that the heart of every feast is the encounter with Christ in the Eucharist.
What made the experience even more memorable for me was witnessing for the first time the Bonok-Bonok Festival, a vibrant cultural expression of Surigao’s people. With its colorful costumes, rhythmic dances, and the strong beat of drums, the festival beautifully blended faith and culture. It was moving to see how the devotion to St. Nicolas was celebrated not only in the liturgy but also in the joyful spirit of the community, giving witness to their gratitude and hope.
Adding to the joy of the celebration was the chance to reunite with my high school classmates. As alumni of San Nicolas College, we are already looking forward with excitement and gratitude to our 50th anniversary next year. This reunion of faith, friendship, and shared memories made the celebration even more meaningful.
And in a more personal way, on this day we remember in prayer my nephew who celebrate his birthday and we also marked the 8th death anniversary of my beloved mother. Remembering her amidst the joy of the feast and the warmth of community made the occasion deeply prayerful, a gentle reminder of the communion of saints and the bonds of love that endure beyond time.
Truly, St. Nicolas de Tolentino continues to inspire and intercede, drawing people closer to Christ through faith, festivity, and community.
